What is an Elementary School Counselor?
The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent, and confident learners. Elementary school counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents, and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification, and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face.

About Ms. Whipple
Hello, my name is Krista Whipple and I am very excited to be starting my first year as the school counselor at Majestic Fields Elementary. I was born in San Luis Obispo, California and my family moved to St. George when I was 13. I grew up in an outdoorsy family and spent lots of time hot air ballooning, camping, and riding dirt bikes. After graduating from Pine View High School I moved back to California to attend college and pursue my interests in art, theater, community service, and traveling. I earned a Bachelor's degree in Human Development from Pacific Oaks College and completed a study abroad program in Nicosia, Cyprus in International Relations traveling extensively through Europe and Asia. When I returned I helped co-found a community theater that is still in operation today. I began my career working in an AmeriCorps program aimed at reducing incidents of bullying in public schools, and as a volunteer working to reduce violence against women and girls. I was a theater teacher for many years in Los Angeles public schools and traveled back to Utah each summer to teach at the Utah Shakespearean Festival in Cedar City. I have been an advocate for increasing the availability of quality after-school programs for low-income and at-risk students and have worked extensively in training teachers, tutors, and community members in substance abuse prevention/intervention and mental health support programs. After meeting my husband in the produce section of my neighborhood grocery store, we started a family and I stayed home with my three children for six years. We finally committed to the best decision we ever made and moved back to St. George in 2018. I returned to work running a youth homeless shelter and eventually moved on to Southwest Behavioral Health Center to focus on prevention work. Two years ago I decided to accept a position at Mountain View Montessori teaching theater to K-7 students. Finally, I decided that pursuing a School Counseling license would allow me to work in a career that combines all of my experience in education and social work, and the positive experience I had earning my Master's degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah definitely confirmed that I chose the right path. I love meeting lots of different people from all over the community and using my creative skills to make a difference. In my free time, I like to spend time with my family, make art, read, and be outside.
